White Heat comes to the Jamfactory

Don Dunstan paved the way for many creative individuals and organisations in the 1970s during his time as Premier of South Australia. Growing up in Adelaide, I remember visiting the original Jamfactory premises as a child and being inspired and amazed at the artists at work and demonstrations of wheel thrown ceramics.

The Jamfactory legacy lives on as THE craft and design hub in Adelaide, and we are thrilled to be included in the Jamfactory's Exhibition Program for 2014! Glass aficionado - Nick Mount will uncover his latest solo exhibition in Gallery I and White Heat in Gallery II.

Exhibition open from Friday 11 July to Sunday 14 September 2014.

Please joins us for the opening night on Thursday 10 July 6pm - 8pm.

Artists Deirdre Hoban and Sarah Hudson will be in attendance on the opening night, pop in and say hello.

Hope to see you there!

June artist of the month: Kris Coad

Kris Coad's Studio

Kris Coad's workbench (detail)
Kris Coad is an established ceramic artist working in Melbourne, Victoria. Her practice is of particular interest to me because she works across number of artistic areas. Coad creates beautiful porcelain tableware and utilitarian objects, subtley inspired by her travels, interest in Asia and appreciation for the 'handmade'. Her installation work often uses multiple, fragile objects which resonate throughout the gallery space. Hung in mid-air, her exhibition work throws eery shadows and creates a sense of quiet reflection.
I look forward to presenting Coad's new work and her interpretation of wearable ceramics.

In her own words....Prue Venables

A search for simplicity and quietness, an essential stillness, motivates my work. The making of functional pots, the exploration of objects to be held and used, alongside a search for new and innovative forms, provides a lifetime of challenge and excitement.

A beautiful cup seems simple and yet is capable of gently holding and reflecting so much ceremony and personal connection. The finished object stands innocently – as if oblivious to the complexities of its history, of making and firing processes. The translucency of porcelain, the light dancing on the sprung tension of a rim, the softly melting body inviting touch, even the frustration of failure – all this and more continues to invite me.

I enjoy the contradictory nature of these pieces - where the sprung tension of the throwing remains clear, but the origins of forms are uncertain. I have a particular interest in the making of functional objects. The work contains references to 18th and 19th century English industrial pottery as well as to more contemporary and familiar metal and plastic vessels.

A talented bunch!

Thank you to all of the international, national and local artists, makers and designers who submitted proposals to the White Heat team, we were thrilled with the response from such a talented pool of creatives.

As our exhibition is specific to Australian artisans we were not able to accomodate international artists - this was no reflection on the talent or the individuality of the work submitted. Thank you for all of your words of encouragement and best wishes with the coordination of the exhibition.

In a perfect world where money was no obstacle - the White Heat team would gladly travel the exhibition internationally! (Visiting jewellery making mecca's like Germany or New Zealand and ceramic havens in Denmark, Sweden & Turkey.)

I would like to showcase some of the amazing work from our international friends, enjoy!
